Kansas eliminated Duke after a 85:81 victory after a sequel and completed the big four on college basketball. The duel between two of the most popular and strong teams in the country ended with a 72:72 draw after 40 minutes of basketball, and in the extra time, Bill Selff`s players struggled against the selection of the famous Mike Kyjevski.
Jacobs return to the Final Four of March`s madness after a break of six years - their latest run dates back to 2012 when they reached the final, which was later lost to Kentucky. Kansas` Ukrainian guard Svyatoslav Mihailuk sent the match for 27 seconds before the end. Earlier, Grayson Allen had given Duke a 69:72 lead, and he was able to win the match but missed in for the remaining 2 seconds and so at 72:72 an extra period came.
The two teams showed a great deal of desire, but at 78:78 and two remaining minutes, Malik Newman scored a three with Kansas leading with 81:78 and set off a 7-0 series to secure the team`s victory. Grayson Allen, however, cut the final three-point difference in the final seconds, which set the final 85:81. It was Newman who scored all 13 points for the winners in the sequel. Malik Newman scored 32 points for Kansas, including 5/12 of the Troika and 11/12 of the penalty line. LaGerald Vick added 14, and Mihailluk and Devon Graham scored 11, with the Europeans picking up 10 rebounds and giving 5 assists, as well as defeating one of Marvin Beigley`s best rivals.
Trevon Duvall scored 20 points for Duke, while Gary Trent Jr. and Marvin Beagle ended with 17 and 16 respectively for the defeat of Blue Devils.
Epic Match. One of the best I`ve ever been involved in. Perhaps even the best, commented happy Bill Selff. They have a successful basketball program, just like we do. And this game by insider tips was proof of that, said in his typical gentleman`s style the coach of the lost team - the legendary Mike Kyjevski. In the semifinals, Kansas will face Vilanova. Jacobs were ranked No. 1 in the Midwest, while Wildcatks were also No. 1, but in the Eastern Region. They got to Finale 4 after a success with 71:59 against Texas Tek.
The other semi-final opposes this year`s Loyola Chicago and Michigan sensation.
The final four starts on 31 March, and the host of the matches is San Antonio.
